	Paul Pestel was born in 1794. He was of German descent, and was Colonel com­manding a Eussian regiment of infantry. He allied himself with a secret society which had for its object the overthrow of the empire, and soon became its most zealous supporter. His schemes were discovered and reported to the Emperor Nicholas, and Pestel was immediately chained in a dungeon, where he remained until his execution, July 11, 1826. There seems to be no reason for disbelieving the statement that shortly before his death, he composed, and with a link of his chain rudely carved upon his dungeon wall, the words and music of this famous song.
